Shore Leave is completely run by volunteers, and it wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of these incredible individuals!

We are a fan-based convention run by The STAT Club of Maryland

Over the years, Shore Leave conventions have been fortunate to receive tremendous support from fellow fans, and we would like to express our gratitude for your previous contributions. Once again, the opportunity to get involved has arrived!

Much like Starfleet, Shore Leave is seeking a few dedicated individuals. Helpers are needed in various areas, including Security, Volunteer Forces (general assistance), Registration, Art Show, and Charities. Applicants should be dependable and possess strong communication skills to interact with all beings, no matter their origin. A variety of tasks are available and can be tailored to match your strengths. If you enjoy working “behind the scenes,” please indicate this on the pre-registration form.

A few details about volunteering for the Volunteer Forces:

  • Volunteers are required to serve a minimum of 12 hours during the weekend (Thursday afternoon through Monday morning). In your first year of volunteering, you will need to pay the registration fee and complete the 12 hours of service. However, the following year’s registration will be free. Each year you volunteer, your registration for the next year will also be free.
  • Be sure to check in early at the volunteer desk to secure your time slots. A sign-up sheet with the events and available time slots will be provided.
  • Before heading to your assignment, volunteers must first sign in at the Volunteer Forces desk.
  • Volunteers will receive a timesheet to track their hours, which must be returned to the Volunteer Forces desk at the end of the convention.
  • If you are assigned to the Volunteer Forces Desk or Information Booth, you must remain at your station until your replacement arrives for the next shift. Don’t worry, we have plenty of volunteers, so this is rarely an issue.

  • After completing your assignment, return to the Volunteer Forces desk to sign out. If you’d like, you can also sign up for your next assignment at that time.

Typical Shore Leave Volunteer Areas

  • Information Booth: Generally 2-hour shifts, but you can do up to 3 hours at a stretch
  • Volunteer Forces Desk: 2 hours at a time, 4 hours maximum which requires at least 1 hour break until your next shift
  • Autograph Line Saturday: 3 hours
  • Autograph Line Sunday: 3 hours
  • Pay-to-Attend workshops: 1 hour per workshop (there are a lot of workshops)
  • Art Show Room: 2 hours at a time
  • Accessibility Seating: 2 hours
  • Thursday Night Program Book Stuffing Marathon: 2 to 3 hours
  • Game Room: 2 hours
  • Blood Drive
  • Setup / Teardown of essential convention areas: Thursday and Monday, moving convention materials to and from storage

Volunteer tasks are straightforward, often involving simple duties and staying aware of your surroundings. For example, in the autograph lines, volunteers may check badges or walk through the convention area with a badge number sign, informing attendees of the current badge series eligible for autographs. We hope you’ll join us in making this year’s Shore Leave one of the best conventions yet. We look forward to seeing you in July!
