J Lee

J. Lee is a multi-talented actor, writer, and musician best known to sci-fi fans for his role as Lt. John LaMarr on The Orville, the hit sci-fi dramedy created by Seth MacFarlane. Originally introduced as the ship’s laid-back navigator, LaMarr’s character arc takes a surprising and satisfying turn when his hidden brilliance is discovered, leading to his promotion as the Orville’s Chief Engineer.

J. Lee brings a unique charm and sharp comedic timing to the role, making LaMarr a fan-favorite for his blend of irreverent humor and unexpected depth. His performance showcases not only his acting chops but also his ability to ground a futuristic world with relatable, human moments.

Before The Orville, J. Lee worked behind the scenes at Family Guy as a production assistant, eventually earning writing credits and developing a close working relationship with MacFarlane. He began classical piano lessons at the age of 3 and eventually went on to receive a music scholarship at Indiana University’s renowned Jacob’s School of Music. After graduating in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance and Theater and Drama, J Lee took the last $200 he had and headed west for Los Angeles to begin his professional entertainment career.

Off-screen, he continues to explore both music and storytelling, bringing the same intelligence and energy to his projects as he does to the engine room of the USS Orville.
