- Critical Heal: Tabletop Role-Playing Games as Therapy
Ariel Vitali
Role-playing games have surged in popularity for at least the last five years, and
some have even entered the mainstream of American culture. In these times, emotional and social health
are needed for so many of us; for some, tabletop RPGs have provided solace from our increased day-to-day
stresses. In fact, RPGs have shown to help many people develop and reinforce behavioral, social and, in
some cases, language and verbal skills. There are pockets of research showing preliminary results of
RPGs used to help young people manage their ADHD, aid those in the autism spectrum and alleviate
life-disrupting mood and anxiety disorder. I will be touching on some of the research being done on RPGs
as therapy, as well as my personal experiences in how two RPGs in particular – Dungeons and Dragons, as
well as Star Trek Adventures – have helped me get through these strange and stressful times.
