The Shore Leave Fan Film Program

In the last few years, amateur and semi-professional fan filming have taken on a new level of maturity and quality. This exciting new form of entertainment is growing rapidly, and more fans are turning to it for great entertainment. Because fan films have become more important to you, they are also more important to us. So...

On the 30th anniversary of Shore Leave, we are inaugurating a new programming track – the Shore Leave Fan Film Program! Shore Leave has shown fan films before, but never like this! We are showing over ten hours of some of the best work the science fiction fan film world has to offer, made by amateur, mixed (amateur and professional), and other non-traditional film-making groups.

STAR TREK: PHASE II (formerly Star Trek: New Voyages)

We only saw three seasons of what was supposed to be the Starship Enterprise’s five-year mission when Star Trek was on the air from 1966-1969. What if there had been a fourth or a fifth season? What if Gene Roddenberry’s pitch for a second Star Trek television series in the mid 1970s had come to pass?

James Cawley decided to find out. He gathered together a group of fans and professionals to make three episodes as Star Trek: New Voyages. Now James continues the mission of the Enterprise and crew as Star Trek: Phase II, filling in the stories we never saw between the end of the series and the first motion picture. The whole crew is there too, from Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock to Bones, Scotty, Uhura Chekov and Sulu. New actors portray these timeless characters on museum-quality sets with authentic costumes and sound, and modern special effects. Writers have included original stories from veteran Trek writers D.C. Fontana, David Gerrold, and others. Guest stars have included Trek Veterans George Takei, Walter Koenig, Denise Crosby, William Windom, BarBara Luna, Malachi Throne, John Winston and more.

James and his crew will be at a fan table. Drop by and see what's shaking in the Phase II world!

We are featuring the following from Star Trek Phase II:

  • On the main ballroom screen, Shore Leave premieres the first smooth cut of Blood and Fire part 1, guest starring Denise Crosby and Bill Blair. Originally pitched to Star Trek: The Next Generation, this episode was turned down due to its controversial storyline dealing with homosexuality and AIDS. Rewritten for the original Trek characters, this episodes brings us social commentary with a message. This running will be followed with an on-stage talk by James Cawley.
  • On the main ballroom screen, also see the award-winning World Enough and Time, guest starring George Takei. When a failed Romulan weapons test traps the Enterprise in an inter-dimensional rift, Sulu and another crewmate go to the remains of the Romulan ships to gather critical escape data. The anomaly's effect on the transporter causes Sulu to come back 30 years older ... and with a daughter! This screening will be followed by an on-stage talk by James Cawley and George Takei.
  • To Serve All my Days, guest starring Walter Koenig, will show in the media room. As the Enterprise battles a mysterious Klingon ship, one famous lieutenant has to fight off his own demons when an old disease starts to age him at an alarming rate.

Sky Conway

Sky Conway is the writer, producer, and actor who brought us Roddenberry on Patrol, that zany and very funny short parody of Roddenberry's quest to find Star Trek. Now he brings us a serious, three-part Trek miniseries – Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. Each part is approximately 30 minutes in length.

  • In the media room, see Star Trek: Of Gods and Men parts 1 and 2, featuring many Trek alumni from all five Star Trek TV series, and feature films and direction by Tim Russ. Uhura and Chekov’s reunion with Captain John Harriman is cut short when they intercept an automated distress signal. Their investigation takes them to a classified location where an encounter with a shadowy figure from their past alters their lives, turning friends into deadly enemies and sending them on a journey from which there may be no escape. Although the series is not yet complete, parts 1 and 2 are compelling stories. You will not want to miss this!
