Joan Winston (1931- 2008)![]() We are saddened to announce the passing of past Shore Leave guest and long-time friend, Joan Winston. Joan passed away in her sleep on September 11. Joan was one of the founders of the original New York Star Trek conventions in the 1970s, paving the way for Shore Leave and other media cons. After retiring from organizing conventions, Joan began attending them as a guest. Initially as a writer, and later as a literary agent. Her most recent appearance at Shore Leave was in 2006 at Shore Leave 28. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale who cared for Joan in her final months. Their address is 5901 Palisade Avenue, Bronx, NY 10471. Robbie Greenberger (1988 - 2008)![]() We are saddened to announce the passing of life-long Shore Leave attendee and friend, Robbie Greenberger. Robbie passed away on the evening of August 14, following a year-long battle with leukemia. Many Shore Leave attendees know Robbie as the son of long-time Shore Leave guest Robert Greenberger, but to the Shore Leave staff and committee members, Robbie was more than just "Bob's son"; he was part of our family. We all watched him grow up along with many of our own children as part of the "Scooby Gang" at successive conventions. It's hard to accept that he's gone. To borrow a line from Peter David, "Do yourselves a favor today. Whatever you're up to, at some point, just stop and take a few deep breaths of air and be appreciative of the fact that you're still alive, and that you have tomorrows to look forward to." In lieu of flowers, contributions in Robbie's memory may be made to The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, 20 York Street, New Haven, CT 06511-3202 (http://www.tommyfund.org/).
